Ummah Naturals was founded on a simple belief: skincare should be as honest as the people who make it.
Ummah Naturals was founded on a simple belief: skincare should be as honest as the people who make it.
In a world of mass-produced cosmetics and disposable consumerism, we chose a different path. We source authentic Aleppo soap, handmade in Syria using centuries-old methods, pure natural ingredients, and craftsmanship passed down through generations. Every bar reflects a tradition that has survived for over a thousand years.
For centuries, Aleppo soap has been made from two defining oils: olive and laurel.
Olive oil forms the foundation. Laurel oil gives the soap its character.
The balance between them matters. A bar made predominantly from olive oil has a milder, softer character, while increasing the proportion of laurel oil creates a firmer, more aromatic soap with a more pronounced cleansing character.
The percentage of laurel oil isn't simply a number on the label. It changes the soap itself.
Olive oil has long been at the heart of Syrian life and agriculture, and it forms the foundation of traditional Aleppo soap.
Olive oil produces a mild, creamy soap with a conditioning character. It is this simplicity that has made olive-oil soap valued for generations.
And unlike fragrance, the aroma comes from the oil itself.
Traditional Aleppo soaps have long been made with different proportions of olive and laurel oil. Each balance creates a different bar.
At Ummah Naturals, our collection reflects this tradition from 100% olive-oil soap through to a 60% Laurel Formulation allowing you to choose a bar according to the character and cleansing experience you prefer.
The higher the laurel content, the more pronounced the laurel oil becomes.
One traditional foundation. Different expressions of the same craft.
Aleppo soap is not simply a recipe. It is a craft passed from one generation to the next.
In a traditional soaphouse of the Old City, our process begins with the simple ingredients being carefully cooked together. Once the soap has reached the right stage, it is poured out and left to cool and set.
Then the work becomes irreplaceably human.
Each freshly set soap bar is cut and stamped individually by hand, before the bars are lifted and carefully stacked in distinctive towers.
The arrangement is more than for tradition's sake. The bars are positioned to allow air to circulate around them.
And then comes the part that cannot be rushed.
The soap is left to air cure for nine months.
During this time, the bars gradually harden and mature. Their outer surface develops the familiar golden-brown appearance of aged Aleppo soap, while the interior retains its characteristic deeper green colour.
No machine can make nine months pass faster.
Even after curing, the process remains personal. Our bars are handled, selected and packed by hand before they leave the soaphouse.
Every subtle variation in shape, colour and marking is a reminder that these are not identical products manufactured on a production line.
They are individual bars, made by people who have inherited the knowledge of how to make them.
This is the craft behind authentic Aleppo soap.
